Weekly Dev Log for December 10th, 2018

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Weekly Dev Log for the week of December 10th, 2018. Here’s what everyone was up to last week! Note: Devs that don’t appear in the weekly log are not necessarily away or not doing work, but may be working on things currently not announced or backend work that doesn’t need to be detailed.

Update Progress

We’ve been working very hard over the last week to get the update ready for release. We’re hoping to release it sometime this week. The update will bring the snow to the plaza with the Winter Lobby!

As well as…

  • an improved Snowball Battle plaza minigame which now features a Blizzard Blaster weapon (instead of throwing snowballs)
  • an improved holiday presents event, along with some new Winter characters (4 in total)
  • new Winter items (such as an Ice Rink and Hockey Puck)
  • and bug fixes that addresses issues such as the physics items not syncing when players first join your Condo

You can see the current progress here.

Community Poll

We’re also just started a community poll, asking you all what areas of the game you feel need more work, and which areas you feel are the most polished. We’d love to hear from you, so check out the poll here.

Collection Book Progress

More work was done on the collection book, bringing about the completion of leaderboards! There’s features to get and set leaderboard values for each game, along with friend/global leaderboards.

You can also sort the leaderboards by map, when applicable. Each level of Ball Race, for example, has its own leaderboard for best times.

Plaza Map / Directory List

Work was completed on a Plaza map that’s been placed around the plaza, which will be ready by the update. Fast travel support will soon be added, but won’t be ready by the update just yet.

We hope this map will guide new players to the many places that the Plaza contains.

Improved Item Award UI

New Blizzard Blaster

In the new snowball battle, this year we wanted to improve on last years by creating a new weapon that will definitely knock your foes back. Chris created the Blizzard Blaster.

RC Car Progress

More progress has been made on the RC Car, which is a baseline which will be used for many milestone items, as well as being an experiment for Accelerate.

Added to the RC vehicle base was the ability to possess and de-possess the RC vehicles, to allow the user to control it in Condo or the Plaza.

Typing Derby Progress

The Typing Derby update, which changes from random words to complete sentences is mostly completed! There was a new API created so that paragraphs can be added to the game without the need to push new updates, and the user interface was updated to make typing multiple lines of words easier.

There’s still some minor UI changes that need to be made before it can be released, but we’re hoping the release it in a update after the update.

Typing Derby Overhaul WIP

@Lifeless and @Johanna continued working on Project 23.
Alex continued working on various emotes.
@joshua continued working on milestone items, completing the Golf Bag item.
@Madmijk continued working on the Resort condo video, nearing its completion.
@Sketchman continued working on the AGC, preparing it for achievements/milestones.

Wrap It Up

That about covers everything that happened last week at PixelTail Games. See you all next Monday!

I don’t have words for that Blizzard Blaster.

I gotta admit, that Blizzard Blaster looks heckin’ cool.

EDIT: I’m pretty dumb realizing that when I do typing tests that I have to press Space consistently. But I like paragraph writing way more then just random words.

It makes me feel more influential with typing tests.

Other then that, Winter update is one step closer for me to make a huge stride into returning into the game way more actively!

Is there a place we can contribute to the paragraph bank? What do y’all select to go into the bank?

It’s a private API, and we get paragraphs from public domain books founds on https://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

I would love to have that Blizzard blaster as a an actual equipable item outside of the event it’s used in, it looks too cool to limit it to one event.

I agree, i would pay all of my life earnings to spray snowballs at people in the lobby

you have no idea how excited i am for this update

I always thought it made sense to use a space between the words because that’s how people actually type, so it gives a more accurate result on how fast you are typing.

Yeah especially with paragraphs I feel like having spaces is a good idea just because it feels natural

Typing Derby will continue to use spaces now, since it’s actual sentences and that’s how people type. Originally I wanted to use Enter for the previous Typing Derby, but Unreal literally wouldn’t capture the Enter key, so I had no choice to only use Space. Now it’s kind of a moot point.

good work devs, always appreciate it, cheers me up.

Spaces just make sense to me, it’s the natural way to type. Counting wpm without spaces isn’t really an accurate portrayal of anyone’s typing prowess.

I worded that badly. I realized that when I take typing tests I have to hit space always.

It just felt weird doing it on completely random words is all, that’s what I should have said from the start.

Apologies for that confusion!
