Hello! ^w^
I have encountered an issue when trying to run Tower Unite on my gaming laptop that uses Ultramarine Linux 43 as the main operating system. Every time I try to launch the game on Steam, it gets stuck on the launching process. This has never happened before since the game runs fine and plays properly back then. So, I’m not sure what it is. Apparently, Tower Unite is the only game in my Steam library that is unable to run while the rest of my other games are able to do so.
Here is a list of troubleshooting methods I tried:
- I tried uninstalling through Steam at first, but for some reason it just stays stuck.
- Verified the game files and there were no corrupted files.
- Tried doing a Proton log on the launch options but never got an error log due to the game not being able to launch in order for it to create a Proton log.
- I checked the running processes using bpytop while Tower Unite was stuck on the launching process on Steam. But I couldn’t find Tower Unite, specifically GameThread.exe running.
- Trying out different Proton versions, both GloriousEggroll’s and also the vanilla ones. Still doesn’t run.
- I have also tried to reinstall the Steam Linux Runtime environments which I did, but it was still not enough to actually get Tower Unite properly running.
- I’ve done a manual uninstallation by removing Tower Unite’s folder from the steamapps folder and also removed it’s .acf manifest file (appmanifest_394690.acf) when it did not uninstall properly. I backed up Tower Unite’s files beforehand.
- The Proton prefix folder which I also backed up, had also been deleted to make sure Proton would be able to make a fresh new prefix folder.
- Despite doing the manual uninstallation and also the reinstalling of Tower Unite which successfully got reinstalled, including the generation of a fresh new Proton prefix folder. The game still does NOT run after all the troubleshooting methods.
It’s unknown on how the game is unable to run and still get stuck on the launching process. Despite the fact, that Proton, the game files of Tower Unite and also the reinstallation process along with the generation of new Proton prefix folder already got successfully reinstalled/reset. (I also made sure that I exited Steam fully in order to do the manual uninstallation and generating a new Proton prefix folder.) However, I am still able to play Tower Unite on my main PC that runs Devuan GNU/Linux 6. I’m just wondering if this is caused by a new update or maybe something to do with current compatibility issues. Still, I’m looking for some help! Thanks!
Small update: I was briefly able to get Tower Unite to stay running under Proton without displaying a game window, which finally allowed me to generate a Proton log before the game returned to its usual behavior of not launching.
Looking through the log, Proton does invoke Tower.exe, but I couldn’t find GameThread.exe being launched. There are also repeated 0xc0000005 access-violation exceptions shortly after Wine loads its X11/window components. The behavior seems consistent with what I was seeing: Steam briefly treats the game as running, but no Tower Unite window actually appears.
I have the full Proton log saved in case if the devs or any fellow Linux gamers want to look deeper into it. I’m not planning to do any more troubleshooting for now, but I wanted to document this while I had the log available.
