Just took a look back at the Indiegogo and am pretty disappointed

Can’t wait either! It’ll definitely be a breath of fresh air and good for the game and its community.

I should add that a big roadblock to the improvements in the interconnectedness of the game has been the delay in the implementation of the new server browser backend.

Every time our programmer is back to work on it, some random new problem will pop up. For example, someone uploads a workshop character that does something really weird that causes entire servers to crash; so our programmer then needs to drop what he’s doing to fix that. It’s frustrating but it’s very close.

lol. Wow. Is that really just an example or did that actually happen?

It has happened multiple times. There are edge cases that nobody ever considered that won’t happen 99.9% of the time, but when it does eventually happen, it can be catastrophic.

Oh wow. Yikes

On a more positive note, I just checked out the new update and the Rail Shooter and Celebrations both look outstanding @Johanna

We have been focused on this. We’ve been working on the backend system for this. That’s literally all Rob has been up to this entire time. It’s 99% done.

Inter-server connectivity is high priority right now, has been for months now. It’s a lot of work to pull off with the current systems. And we only have a few programmers. We’re having to invent our own master server list and server backend systems to power this.

In GMT we had to manage two 64 player servers (and gamemode servers). We now have 700+ players who all have to be connected to a backend and they have to connect to our backend for server listing to happen, just so we can connect and show all the condos that are available. The Steam server list is incredibly limiting and totally broken (it reports the wrong player counts).

Will this new server structure deprecate player-hosted game world servers, the game world ports server and the separate game worlds menu? Because I see that as the main hurdle to socialisation in TU, likely born as placeholders.

This is better answered by the changes in the Trello post: https://trello.com/c/lIIyx8aK/563-improved-plaza-connectivity

But basically:

  • All condos will connect to EVERY Plaza’s condo lobby
  • Players traveling to condo will be announced in the Plaza
  • Game Worlds can have better matchmaking, we can display all Game World servers in all Plazas, instead of just matchmaking with people in the Plaza you are in.
  • The concept of Plaza serverlist would be taken away, no need to have it. You’ll have a selection to join a Plaza (and it finds the most popular and with a slot open Plaza), and options that show where your friends are in other Plazas (to join your friends). With regions as well. It’s hard to describe but we’ll have more information on this.
  • Game World menus is something we are still discussing about how to best handle. There are players who play game worlds with their friends and want only to play with friends, and they should be allowed to. We don’t want to alienate those players, but we do want to incentivise players to use matchmaking and join Plazas.

I’m assuming this has been talked about already but would it be possible to get rid of the public server browsers, and then have a friends-only server browser accessible from the main menu and/or buttons in the game world ports?

In my opinion, game world matchmaking should all be handled in the Plaza and the game world ports therein should allow a player to choose the kind of match they want, the problem is that this would require a lot of UI rework.

That’s our goal.

gud :+1:

Ok, so this has definitely made for a really interesting discussion but I really would like one of the devs to just lock this now. I really don’t know what got into me. I love TU and you guys are doing a great job at making it. Thinking about what @Johanna said about it being “the tragedy of TU/GMT”, she’s absolutely right. It’s impossible to please everyone and, since I’m vastly in the minority for VR support, I’m just gonna have to let it go and accept that things change. And as someone else in here said, I just gotta stop nitpicking and look at the big picture. Of everything that has been accomplished and the amazing game we have and all the awesome stuff we have to look forward to.

I’m really sorry to the devs as well as the community for being so nitpicky and annoying.

Your frustrations aren’t entirely unfounded. You didn’t entirely know the full story and its not wrong to ask questions.

Truth be told, yes its taken a lot of time for some features to come out, but when you’re working as a team, especially in a game that’s in Early Access, your design focus shifts a lot. Say I were to develop a game with a team, and we were working on a new, requested feature, but saw that another area of the game needed to be updated and optimized due to some kind of issue. Would it be more appropriate to take care of that issue first, or simply continue working on the new feature and not worry about the problem? Decisions like that are important in this scope as sometimes its better to hammer things out in one way than it is with another.

Take Accelerate, for instance. A lot of the base assets needed had to do with vehicle coding, and implementing a vehicle system. This is why RC cars came out first, as it was a great way to work on the vehicle system to adapt to a gamemode like Accelerate, as well as the fact that it was a feature many players were looking forward to at the time.

Believe me, I wish things could come out faster too. I’m waiting with bated breath for that new condo that Lifeless is making, and believe me when I say it can’t get here soon enough, but I’d rather he take his time and really hammer it out rather than pull an Activision and release a half-baked product. Good development takes time, and trust me friend, when this game reaches its completion wether that’s 5 years or 10 years or however long it takes from now, you’re gonna look back and realize that, hot damn, the wait was worth it.

Dude, that new condo looks fucking incredible. But yeah, I have no doubts whatsoever that this game will one day be finished and will be incredible. Other than that, I addressed most of what you said in my last post.

This thread right here shows why I love this game so much. It’s so easy to raise a point because the developers are so vocal. Pretty p o g if you ask me

But as stated before by Johanna, the game is constantly being updated and sometimes it feels like it isn’t due to lack of interest in a particular update. That’s nobody’s fault. Personally, and I know i’m going to get crucified for saying this, I wasn’t that interested in the arcade. Well, before it came out. Now it has, I love it. But when it was in development, I had no idea it would be so good. So it really did feel like there was a long period of time where little to nothing was happening. I’m glad you brought up that point actually.

This was exactly how I felt. Obviously, I love the arcade now and I’d say that time was well spent. I know there are probably lots who aren’t interested in a cooking update. I’m down for a cooking update.
I feel like when it comes to an early access games, it’s too easy to judge it on how it is now, rather than how it will be. Nobody can say how it’s actually going to turn out.
