Role playing games tend to use dice as a way of determining outcomes, generally with a target number to beat and with modifiers applied to what you rolled depending on your character’s skills and any relevant status effects. There are many ways dice have been used, but the most well known is undoubtedly the roll of a single d20 (20 sided die), popularized by Dungeons and Dragons.
