As a rule of hand, whenever you see a mesh used elsewhere in the game but not in condos there’s a very simple explanation: it would need to be art passed, remodelled, or retextured to match the current standards of Condo Items.
For instance, the “Commercial Fridge Case” is not modelled to open and uses many material slots instead of just 1 or 2 (the Hub Elevator is a MUCH more extreme example of this). The Ceiling Lights also don’t have a back whatsoever… they’re designed specifically for map-making like this. The Kiosk was also designed to be a simple prop… so it’d kinda stand out amongst current items.
Here are some standouts:
This isn’t possible, just gonna be blunt with you. Every time you see something like this, it’s a custom model designed for that specific texture. The closest approximation you could get would look awful (using the shader surface offset you see on stuff like the Igneous Rock material).
The hedges are something I intend to art pass because they’re ports from GMT… but these hedges are based off the ones from House and honestly don’t look great either.
I agree with a lot of these, especially the ceiling lights. I’ve been looking for a good panel light to use in some office environments but the best solution I’ve been able to find thus far is using a canvas texture or a scaled up square light box.
There’s definitely a weird crossover point where furniture items are so simple that you could re-create them in seconds with canvas primitives. However, it’s nice to have prefabs for players who might not be familiar with advanced building techniques or don’t have the patience to make everything out of primitives, even if it’s technically possible. I don’t mind more plaza furniture items being added even if they’re simple. Especially if they’re already in the game - it’s good to reuse game assets where possible.
There’s also a performance aspect. If you have say, a Canvas table, yo got a table top and 4 legs, then probably a secondary table top layer, and maybe a lower shelf like a coffe table, then say you’re like Goop and use additional items to add extra details to the legs so they’re not flat and boring, we’ll say 4 items per leg. That’s now 23 canvas items instead of one in-game table item. Shit adds up in big condos.
I only do heavy detailing on older wood furniture. I prefer to use smart texturing to keep item count down for things like trimming on tables and their legs. The hemisphere light would be like, 5 items max.
The only reason I’m so aggressive about this is that outsmoke is notoriously unwilling to put in a lot of effort, and the way he suggests things often comes off as very rude. Like what i quoted in my first reply:
This is a lot of work on the devs part when it could take a couple minutes to make the item max, and then just alt dupe it.
Maybe I’m missing something here, what’s wrong with that? A ton of Condo objects don’t have backfaces, and I can’t think of a scenario where anyone would see that the ceiling lights don’t have one unless they’re placed on a glass/transparent roof.
Also if it means having more useful objects, imo it’s not a big deal if something like the beverage cooler isn’t openable, colorable, or that the kiosk is “lower quality.” The kiosk looks alright to me.. but I’m not picky about that sort of thing, like for example the GMT hedges look perfectly fine. I don’t think the game is desperately needing high-poly 4K hedges.
