I’m trying to find a nice modern theme for Ubuntu 16.04, I already use paper (a material design theme for Ubuntu) but I’m not a huge fan of it.

Sry. Can’t help you with that. Have you ever thought about using Gnome instead of Unity as your Desktop Environment? I highly prefer Gnome over Unity because there are a lot extensions and themes available for Gnome.

And some must-have extensions: Disconnect wifi, Refresh wifi connections, Drop down terminal, Media player indicator, suspend button, system monitor, volume mixer
While like gnome, i like unity more. Although Zukitire looks wonderful
