Hello!
I would like to propose two additional categories to potentially expand the pool of acceptable trivia or at least to declutter the General Knowledge category. I’ll list the suggested categories and potential questions below:
- Category: Culture and Religion (could just be culture)
- Reason: Some aspects of cultures around the world would not be general knowledge, or easily fit into other categories. I would also say this category could broadly include other topics, like religion, holidays, and cultural history (eg. History behind a holiday. African countries have quite a rich and sometimes not too fun history behind some of their holidays…)
- Example Questions w/ answers:
- Choice: Deemed one of the most important holidays in German, which holiday commemorates the reunification of East and West Germany. (German Unity Day)
- T/F: Waitangi Day is celebrated in New Zealand to commemorate the nation’s founding. (true)
- Choice: Germany recognizes Holocaust Memorial Day during which day of the year? (January)
- Choice: National Foundation Day recognizes the founding of Japan by which legendary first emperor? (Jimmu)
- T/F: In South Africa, Workers’ Day falls on the anniversary of a 1950 strike protesting the suppression of communism. (True)
- Choice: Which South African holiday is observed on December 26 annually? (Day of Goodwill)
- T/F: Ash Wednesday is observed by both Christianity and Islam. (False)
- T/F: Throughout Japan, Stamp Rallies encourage visitors and tourists to explore and visit areas and attractions (this question would need some work shopping, but TRUE)
- Category: Language
- Reason: a distinct category for language could pave the way to new questions focused on other languages and phrases. I’d say knowing some specific phrase or word in Spanish, French, or even Japanese isn’t common or general knowledge, but could be appreciated by those looking for these types of questions. Additionally, there are certain sayings/idioms that could be fun to introduce in questions. This could even have a few sub-categories if needed, such as Foreign Language, Grammar (this IMO would not be fun), and Sayings/Local Language.
- Example Questions w/ answers:
- T/F: The term ‘Hoosier’ is commonly used in southern Illinois and Indiana. (True)
- Choice: Which of the following could be used to greet someone in German? (Willkommen)
- T/F: In the Spanish alphabet, ‘ñ’ comes before ‘n’. (False)
- T/F: The Spanish alphabet has 27 letters. (True)
- Choice: In Spanish, ‘asi-asi’ means what? (So-so)
- Choice: How many characters are in the German alphabet? (30)
- Choice: ‘G’Day’ is a greeting often associated with which country? (Australia)
- Choice: What is the common greeting associated with Hawaii? (Aloha)
If these (or any other) categories are introduced I’d be happy to submit questions for them to get a count above 30.
