It would be nice to add such item, for those who missed the opportunity to back this game.
(I can already see backers downvoting this, but please bare with me.)
These shoes: -Are not as good looking as the backers one, just functionally the same. (No visual effects, made out of cardboard) -Should cost a lot of units. (Upwards of 100k units)
Of course the backers should have certain exclusives/bragging rights, afterall, they are the reason why this game exists. But hardcore fans who are willing to pay the price, should also be able to enjoy the perk of navigating through the lobby quickly.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind paying cash for it. But the devs are for “one time payment only”, therefore I doubt they will do it.
TLDR: Shitty looking shoes that makes you run faster, that costs A LOT.

I think this is a good idea, it is really annoying having to walk slowly everywhere on the plaza. Even the jetpack is still slow when you are trying to go forward and not up. The description of the shoes could be something like “These were at the dump, they remained intact but arent sparkley”
Its a bit unfair don’t you think, its not the looks that we care about, its what it does. I would be pissed if you could buy the backer items in game, its a big middle finger to the hardcore fans who paid more (cause exchange rate) than the normal cost of the game. I get that you and many others are sad about missing the backer page, but hey, there is nothing you can do now.
Think of it this way, you backed the game, all happy with being different than most. Then you read that some one wanted to make the shoes buy-able, how would YOU react. You would probably not agree with it, you would want your item to be special and not let any one else have it. You missed out backing the game, sorry about that, but its life.
As a backer myself I’ll admit that I’ve wished for these. It kind of felt a tad unfair that nobody else had quick transportation (though sometimes walking from place to place is an experience of its own that should be appreciated. In fact, with people visibly travelling around the Plaza, perhaps the Plaza may be a little more social?).
However, instead of being cardboard shoes, perhaps they can be simply recoloured, even if these new shoes are just 2/3 the speed of the backer shoes. Perhaps give the game some time and you may or may not see some alternatives, such as speedy vehicles, teleportation of some sort, horizontal support for jetpacks, Workshop items that can only be used on Unranked servers and in condos, etcetera, with some alternatives being more appealing than the shoes themselves.
My personal opinion here: I am disappointed that a really generic and useful functional item was locked behind a paywall. I understand that not every player is equal, so it’s just something I’ll need to deal with.
Like I’ve said, I don’t mind paying extra. If they decided to add a “Late Backer DLC” for $20, I’d go for it. lol
If I was a backer, I’d feel bad for those who have to walk slowly everywhere because they either missed the indiegogo date, or simply found out about the game a bit late.
Personally I really liked the VIP system back in lobby 1, simply because even late-comers can enjoy the game fully with VIP perks.
I am not a backer but I can feel for both sides of the fence here. I know if I was, I would want that exclusivity for myself. But it is also a huge pain when you are in the Plaza and someone in chat says to come join a gameworld, and you can’t make it in time.
To add to this, if everyone could purchase some speed shoes, then everyone would be zipping around and it would take away from the “stop and smell the roses” aesthetic.

Mac once said that there will be other items which make you fast, so the backer speed shoes won’t be the only thing. However the other items won’t be as fast as the speed shoes (they are radically fast).
That makes sense, I mean, GMT had the takeon me ball, which you didn’t have to pay for with real money to get, you simply had to get a milestone. Why make a feature that was once accessible by everyone now a thing exclusive to a select amount of people?
I can understand devs wanting players to be more social, but the nature of people who are antisocial wont change just because you force them to walk slower lol
Besides that, I definitely agree with you. Not only is it a paywall, it is also time limited. Which in a way, is punishing people who are just finding out about the game.
Although I appreciate that concept, the availability of the jetpack has already compromised that ideal somewhat. I think people would perhaps be more encourage to do this when the Plaza gets more details and features.
If a convenience feature like the Speed Shoes is going to be added in this game at all, you might as well open it up to everyone in some form
Guys Guys all we need, Is Heelys shoes. They aren’t too fast to match the Sonic Shoes, They won’t have a trail since they aren’t magic. and they would look Okay because they are just shoes with wheels.
