Self-Hosted Item Models (Possibly via URL)

I’d like for there to be the ability to upload our .model and .json files to a webserver, and host them from there, and have an option to enter a URL for workshop furnature/physics items instead only from the steam workshop.

This would allow us to host our own work, especially in cases where something may not exactly be within the Steam Workshop’s terms.

( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)

We don’t have any plans to support models outside of Steam Workshop.

Lame.

Why? It’s not that hard to upload something to the Steam Workshop. I wouldn’t want to see NSFW 3D models in condos anyway, canvases are more than enough.

just having normal models in your condo, or at the most, some NSFW pictures < taking 2 hours to masterfully craft your own pornographic models to put in your virtual house

Then, like canvases, use the black/whitelists, or just don’t go into NSFW condos, simple.

This has nothing to do with “difficulty to upload to steam workshop”. This is about having the freedom to host your own content however you wish to on your own servers, like you could in Garry’s Mod.

Besides, I’m not planning on using full-on pornographic models, just some mildly lewd props that might may or may not barely pass on the workshop, and I don’t want to even risk it. On GMOD Tower I didn’t have to worry because I could host my own stuff.

Another argument that could be made is supporting other platforms than Steam, or the guarantee of permanence by having more than one place to keep your content. (Not saying it’ll happen, but what if your workshop stuff disappears due to some failure of the steam servers or backend changes?)

The owners of those condos rarely ever warn you before you enter their condo.

^^^ I just don’t go into other people’s condos for that reason. How often is it that you look in the condo list and like 5+ condos say ““insertnamehere’s funhouse of pornography””

Then use the blacklist/whitelist/trusted players only settings, goddamn. There’s features here to block content you don’t want or like, or only allow content from people or URLs/domains you trust; Make use of them. Don’t punish everyone / deny the freedom to self-host content because you’re too lazy to use these filtering features.

Oh, and don’t even get me started on community condos, if I can’t host my own content on my own dedicated servers at the bare minimum like GMod, then that’s it, I’m done, getting a refund somehow come hell or high water because that basically kills what I had planned on doing down the road and a major reason why I bought TU. (A large community condo with my clan with a lot of unique content that I don’t want stolen).

This is because NSFW content isn’t the only purpose for supporting self-hosted content outside the workshop. Such as building condos that are truly unique without putting everything up publicly on the workshop for others to easily take, while still letting others view everything. (Which is a big motivating factor for me when it comes to this feature suggestion, when dedicated servers for community condos happens.)

Also, I love how a complete non-solution is being marked constantly as the solution, without any real good discourse than “ugh I dun wunna see pr0n” when there’s a crapload of other reasons to have such a feature. Wonderful.

The only way I’ll be able to block them is to see whatever bad thing is in their condo. I can’t unsee something just by blocking it.

Whitelist.
Whitelist.
Whitelist.
Whitelist.
Whitelist.

That, and communication. You can usually ask people what is there before unblocking via the whitelist. Or you know, play with friends.

I’m done arguing.

Would it make you feel better if they added a checkmark in condo settings, to set it as “NSFW”? (And encourage people to make use of it appropriately lest they get reported and lose permission to have their condo listed on the server list?)

This is highly unlikely, but I’m running out of ideas at this point. I don’t see why there’s this much fuss, considering TU already allows canvases from any source. How is this is any different than that? Like, what difference does it make? One’s 3D and one’s 2D? Whoopdeedoo!

If Steam decides to retire Workshop, we’d try to figure out another way. However, Steam would never retire workshop and Steam servers won’t become unreliable.

Workshop gives us an easy way for everyone to share content, download content, and moderate content.

Community Condos will have ways to decorate and customize to be unique. That’s always been our goal with them and that’s why our plans were changed since we couldn’t offer that for Plaza.

I’ll be real honest here, and this is something I personally am saying, not just because I’m a developer. Threatening to refund the game because you desire a feature is honestly not how you should convince others it’s a useful feature to you.

Please stop spamming this. This isn’t very useful.

We’ve talked about this before. Adding a tag to condos like NSFW would not be useful for the end user. We can’t expect players to properly mark their Condos and we aren’t going to sit there and join/handle reports of every single Condo that didn’t properly mark their Condos. It’s just not feasible. And if the tag can be abused, what’s the point of the tag?

There is a lot of work into adding custom model support that doesn’t rely on Steam Workshop. The entire system is hard coded for Steam Workshop download and install call backs. We’d have to make an entire system that downloads from custom URLs, stores them, then handles whenever they are updated (probably by CRC checks), then update all the UI to handle this, then update the workshop editor to export differently, handle blocking URLs, blocking players, blacklists/whitelists. Not to mention this would open the game up for binary based exploits as you’re now downloading a random file from an unsecure location (is it a .model, or is it a trojan, who knows).

It’s not really entirely something we’ve really considered fully, but maybe some day down the road we can consider it if there’s enough support for it.

Workshop content is important. By having custom URLs, you are also limiting what’s available on Workshop. Right now isn’t the proper time for that as we need to grow our Workshop content.

NSFW content could one day be a possibility in our Workshop; it’s definitely a route we can also investigate, if we so choose to. We’d also need to handle that as well and it’s another thing to consider and design.

not to prod the fire, but can’t you just set your workshop items to private? and just because you’re hosting the items yourself, what’s stopping somebody from just looking at the item and seeing where you’re hosting it from, and then they use the model themselves, or just port it to the workshop? and why should the devs put in a bunch of work just because you’re too greedy for the possibility that someone would want your model?

why threaten to refund a game because the devs don’t want to sink in hours work and set up specific measures for condos, because of your greed?

try not to talk to other forum members as if they were children. it’s not a good look.

if the toxicity from global chat was a person, you would be that person.

Workshop it’s great and easy way for everybody to share on the community, btw and like mac said, for moderate content is good, because if they add self hosted url, it’s going to be pornhub in few hours, so no thanks aha ^^

IIRC, if you set something to private, only you are able to see it

i just checked my workshop, and it’s possible to have items set as friends only.

all this for boobie models

Of course it’s possible to have models set to friends only. The thing is, only you and friends can see it.
Public = anyone can use, anyone can see
Friends only = any friend can use, any friend can see
Private = only you can use it, but only you will be able to see it
