Least popular condo?

We all have our favourite condo map of choice. Whether it’s the simple default condo, or the suburban hellscape of the house, it all comes down to preference. I have always wondered, however, what everyone’s least favourite condo map is and why. I am not talking about the quality of the map, of course. I think they’re all lovely. But in terms of personal preference, what is everyone’s least favourite condo type?

Personally, mine is the underwater condo. I find the shapes of the rooms to be awkward to work, as the walls are usually all curved. I see the appeal, but it’s not there for me.

My least favorites would have to be Art Studio, Smooth Autumn, and Ice Moon.

The Recording Room in Art Studio have a weird wall and turning it invisible will show the whole rectangle floor to begin with, making it a bit more work for me to make windows and such.
If you were to try turning it into an actual Studio home anyway.

The trees in Smooth Autumn doesn’t have any light on them, so nighttime is not useable from my experience.

Ice Moon well… I have little to no imagination for it. Last time I made something was a “Space Western” theme but then I change it to a really small space home.
Not a lot of furniture is good with it unless using workshop stuff.

And yeah, I don’t hate any of them either.

I’m not too sure TBH - despite the fect I’ve played TU for 5 years, I can’t really decide. I’ve never even tried High Rise (only just to get the achievement).

Ice moon is by far the worst IMO, the amount of effort you go through to get it is insane compared to what you get. I spent about 250k units on the wheel to get it, for a condo that’s not even that large, and it’s only gimmick is that it has low gravity, which was special when it came out, then a few months later gravity volumes were added with I/O. Before sky volumes were added, there was no way to change the time of day on the map. The map is not worth wasting your time getting.

Art studio and theater used to be good before sky volumes, now they aren’t even compatible with sky volumes. (Which means NO FOG OPTIONS) They were good because the void outside the map had no sunlight, which meant you had full control over your lighting. Nowadays, the sky’s light can be turned completely black on any sky volume compatible map. Theater is just too niche to be used for anything interesting, but I’ve still seen quite a few good art studio condos.

The biggest gripe I have with Smooth Autumn is the fact that you can’t see the moon. You’d think a map that is centered around autumn would let you have a spooky halloween full moon.

Good picks! To be fair, I forget about all of those and haven’t even seen the ice moon map so they would probably be my least favourites had I actually remembered/tried them all

I hate theater with a passion. I have absolutely no use for it, it feels limited to just being…well, a movie theater. I get the ice moon hate but I personally enjoy having a space-themed condo even if the options are limited

Underwater

Pros:

  • Nice views from the pod windows

Cons:

  • Gimmick condo
  • Angled rooms
  • Rooms with angled walls
  • Bug where the surface of the water flickers in and out

Highrise

Pros:

  • Very spacious

Cons:

  • Angled rooms
  • Rooms with angled walls
  • Pool skylight lighting can’t be modified
  • The trim in some of the rooms can’t be retextured

Ice Moon

Pros:

  • Good as a foundation for a sci-fi build

Cons:

  • Gimmick condo, low gravity can now be replicated elsewhere
  • Incompatible with sky volume
  • Perimeter wall is rather pointless

Based on how nobody else has mentioned it, I’m probably the weird one here when I say that I really, really don’t like the house condo.

  • The garden/yard is colossal and difficult to even slightly fill with anything but tree spam.

  • Room layouts are often in the worst possible shapes they could be. The kitchen has a door to the garage that blocks you from putting any kind of large table in, the bedrooms on both floors are this weird C shape that is begging for a divider, the basement is bigger than the actual house for some ungodly reason, and the ground floor lounge has a super weird mini kitchen?

  • The stairs to the ground floor goes straight into the bedroom and not the hallway??? Why???

  • The stairs on the outdoors deck don’t have railings, and the deck uses a type of railing that you cannot buy or easily replicate with primitives to make up for that.

  • Here’s something you’ll never unsee, they don’t even connect properly and have missing faces.

  • Because the house is from an older era of TU, it’s missing a lot of editable/hideable decorations. The mini kitchen in the ground floor lounge, the kitchen counters and cupboards, the fireplace, they all miss editable surfaces or the option to remove them entirely. …but not the bathroom mirror which did get updated to be removable at some point. How odd.

  • The garage has some pretty bad cases of light leakage. I checked and these don’t go away if you get closer to them, so it’s not a LOD thing.

  • If you needed more space for some insane reason, good luck with that because the house uses a unique exterior wall model that will be a pain to copy with canvas primitives. The closest easiest solution is to use a corrugated canvas, but that’s way too smooth for the intended effect - you’ll have to use a crazy amount of wedges and pray to god that the texture applies right.

  • The exterior floor uses a texture that isn’t recognised in the surface picker. Not a problem given that you can change it to any other stone, but it’s still worth mentioning if you did like that default texture.

I’d really like to see Pixeltail do a second attempt at a house condo - something smaller and with a less insane layout.

Actually, from what I can tell, Ice Moon actually is compatible with Sky Volumes!

The House is actually based on a real house. Those large rooms were actually divided into two or three smaller rooms. I added my own walls for my house condo.

The basement was an extra addition, though. Not in the original floor plan. I guess somebody thought the condo somehow needed more space. Honestly might be a good idea to turn the stairs that go into the basement into a closet, or a smaller basement. In my opinion, sometimes it’s better to have extra rooms that you can easily block off, than to not have enough rooms and have to do teleporter trickery to add more.

Not sure what you mean by this, there’s some space that you go around to get into the hallway. This layout of the stairs is actually pretty common in homes.

Overall I actually do like the house condo, you just have to do some home improvement to divide up those big rooms. They’ve actually been doing quite a few touchups recently to the House condo. The fireplace used to be off center from the chimney. They fixed that.

It’s not something I’ve ever seen in my life - staircases always start and end in a central hallway where I live, the idea that one would end in the same room as a bedroom, especially without a divider wall and door, is insane to me.

Groverhaus is also a real house. That doesn’t mean it’s well designed, just that it exists.
And yes, adding walls yourself does solve a few problems with the houses layout, just wish it was better by default.

Now I’m even more confused. It doesn’t lead into the bedroom, it leads into the central hallway? There is a wall dividing them.

EDIT: nvm, you mean the downstairs bedroom. Again, pretty sure the original floor plan had a wall there. I use that area as the laundry room.

I know you’ve already edited it, but the top floor is what I would expect from a staircase.
It ends/starts in a hallway and doesn’t pass through any rooms other than a hallway. You don’t have to deal with me walking through your bedroom full of 100 unit beers at 3am for example.

Then it seems even odder that it is just like this by default. The floor has a clear divide for a small room there but they didn’t do it for whatever reason? It’s not as the only way to enter the room as there’s another, more expected hallway leading to the same bedroom.

Again, I’m aware that you can just make the wall/divider - but the appeal of a condo like this is that you only need to decorate it with personal touches. The floor plan should already be solid and ready for you to have 3 different living rooms.

My favorites are the house, underwater and smooth dirt
least favorites are resort, high rise and smooth autumn

Smooth dirt is boring, but you make your own fun with that. I actually think it encapsulates the whole condo aspect of the game itself. You make your own fun with it. If you don’t bother with it, you won’t find it fun. In that respect, to me, it’s the most condo-y condo. I respect it for that. So, yeah, hard agree.

I loved the resort when it first came out. But since, I have come to realise how much excess there is in it. It’s a fantastic map and they did a brilliant job in recreating the old Lobby 1. But then, it was designed to be a plaza, not a condo. I understand that it’s for community condos or whatever, but still. There’s a lot to it. I would bother more with decorating my resort, but there aren’t enough hours in the day.
