Right now, the fact that you’re allowed to use any custom playermodel in SDNL has huge complications, since the hitbox of your character may not align with the model you are using. Also, some people use custom models that are nearly impossible to see, and other people use enormous models that take up way too much space. I saw a realistically sized scorpion tank from Halo in a game once.
I know that SDNL isn’t supposed to be a super competitive thing, but this can still be a source of frustration. But at the same time, I love being able to see all the wacky characters people play as. I think completely removing custom playermodels would take much of the soul out of the game, because seeing Hugh Neutron blow the brains out of Captain Falcon with a magnum is one of my favorite things ever, and I don’t want to lose that.
The best solution that I’ve been able to think of would be to let players toggle between seeing custom models, or making all other players appear as the default models. It could even be a hotkey, like Alt for example. Or, maybe even better; instead of that hotkey making players appear as the default models, it would instead show the actual hitboxes of the other players. On gamemodes where there’s teams, the hitboxes could be color-coded to show who’s on your team.
I propose three settings:
Seeing playermodels as normal (how the game currently is)
Seeing hitboxes of other players overlayed on top of the playermodels
Hiding playermodels and only seeing the hitboxes (so if someone is using an obnoxiously large model, you can hide it)
But the most important thing, in my opinion, is that I think individual players should get to choose whether or not they see the custom models. It should be a clientside thing, basically. Player choice is really important, so letting the player choose for themselves how they want to experience the game would be best.
I absolutely agree, I feel like people that want custom playermodels removed entirely from SDNL don’t understand people that actually enjoy it.
I’ve noticed so many avatars have such an unfair advantage, especially the joke models that are just 2D pngs or cardboard cutouts. With those at most angles it’s impossible to see them.
This, no other shooter really replicates the experience of this. I personally enjoy playing with playermodels because of the stupid fun to be had, and the fact that I play casually. But I understand many people do not feel that way.
This, absolutely this. Because the hitboxes are identical to the default Tower Unite playermodels this is really only something that affects you client side. This lets people like me still play with dumb playermodels, but for those that don’t want the frustration it could default to the normal Pixeltail avatars.
If we could just have an optional setting to either show the hitboxes and/or revert everyone to a default model (client side), I think it would ease a lot of the tension.
There is a setting in the workshop settings to disable workshop player models in game worlds.
Personally, I don’t want to remove custom player models from SDNL. I do however think we can improve it and it’ll be something we will try to figure out.
I feel like this still doesn’t fully help. A lot pf people don’t customize their default avatar so when you have workshop off you just see an all white person who’s sometimes like a third of your height–which isn’t that fun to play against on Frostbite imo, especially with how fast and floaty the mode is.
True. In my opinion though, between camouflage and guesstimating hitboxes, camouflage is the lesser of two evils. Still a problem nonetheless
Might be a good opportunity to make a custom SDNL-themed default avatar guy
I would suggest perhaps having an option for hosts specifically that disable/enable workshop playermodel use in the match.
That way if you’re playing with friends specifically, you can still enjoy a romp with them and your playermodels. Or for hosts that want a fair match, can disable them and everyone will default to perhaps a SDNL default playermodel (Akin to how players defaulted to HEV Suit in PvP)
I actually did not know this! But it would be perfect in conjunction with a hotkey to turn all custom models on/off. This way, if you’re fighting someone with an obnoxious custom playermodel, you can immediately turn all custom models off with the hotkey. Then, when you have a moment to breathe, you can block the model of that user in particular, and use the hotkey to re-enable custom playermodels for everyone else. Then regardless of whether you have custom models on or off, you won’t have to see that person’s playermodel anymore.
If the devs decide to implement such a hotkey, the only thing I want to mention is that they should make sure that the hotkey does not unblock that player’s model.
I thought about this too, but I personally think that it should only be a clientside thing. As long as every single person involved in the game is able to choose what they see, I don’t think it is necessary to let the host turn off all custom playermodels. If someone does not want to see them, they can turn it off for themselves.
I’ve been wanting something like this for ages. I love seeing peoples’ exact hitboxes and I love seeing spongebob burn me to death and I just want to have both at once.
The scoreboard could also be improved to make it easier to block models, though. It’s easy to see a model that you want to block in-game, but since the scoreboard doesn’t directly show the model that’s being used, you have to manage to get close enough to the player using the model to read their name. Showing the model a player’s using directly under their name would probably make things easier.
This would probably be much more complicated than most other suggestions here, but it’d be very nice to be able to block specific models exclusively in SDNL (rather than game-wide).
Someone in a match I played last night was using the Untitled Goose model - I love seeing that model in Plaza and other modes, but in SDNL their height makes them way more difficult to notice and aim at.
