I want to join the Discord, but then I see PTSD jokes, and I donā€™t want to join the Discord

do you see my problem

Discord is a lot of fun. I normally just go on there to talk to mac and play games with people

What do you think the response would be if I said something to the effect of ā€œcan we avoid tasteless, offensive jokes, please, weā€™re better than thatā€ when they made an assholish joke (such as a PTSD joke)? Because if theyā€™d say Iā€™m being oversensitive Iā€™m not joining the Discord. I might not be missed, but I donā€™t want to voluntarily enter an environment like that.

Well pretty much the way most people think on discord is: ā€œIf it doesnā€™t offend me, it wont offend othersā€

ā€¦so if it does offend others, they acknowledge that and apologise or something? Or do they run with that assumption even after itā€™s contradicted

It depends. But if you do get triggered by stuff I wouldnā€™t go there.

Everyone on there is nice. Its just when it comes to offending someone, weā€™re robots

Right. I donā€™t get triggered, because I donā€™t have PTSD, but if I see something I object to I call it out. I guess weā€™ll see what happens.

saw you earlier, talking about Tumblr, you really notice itā€¦

Yeah, no, there was a molestation joke, Iā€™m outta here.

God, I HATE IT when people make ā€˜triggeredā€™ jokes. Donā€™t they realize itā€™s an ACTUAL PROBLEM people have? Itā€™s like using ā€˜autisticā€™ as a synonym for ā€˜stupid.ā€™

ā€¦Iā€™m only still in the Discord just for dev updates and due to the fact that itā€™s the most active chat Iā€™m in right now, honestly. Other than that, itā€™s pretty shitty.

I know its a actual problem that people have. And I know they canā€™t do anything to help it. Its their choice if they want to be offended by something or not.

Some people get offended by the word ā€œhelloā€ (And then write 5 paragraphs about how their ex always said hello when talking to them but then abused them blah blah blah)

Iā€™ve gotten to a stage where because people used to try and make shit up about me, I stopped caring.
Them: ā€œYouā€™re such a faggotā€
Me: "Ohhh stop it you or iā€™ll come for you next  "

Then they donā€™t do it again

I hate that idea that people choose to be offended. That doesnā€™t happen. People are offended by things regardless of whether they show it or not. The only choice is whether they react, and all thatā€™s driven by is whether they think itā€™ll make somebody else stop doing the offensive thing or not.

The ridiculous hypothetical you included isnā€™t a case of offense. That is an actual trigger, and itā€™s different from offense in that a trigger can cause flashbacks, anxiety, and literal panic attacks. This is the exact same shit that soldiers who come back from war can have. Would you go up to an Iraq veteran whoā€™s been diagnosed with PTSD and then start playing gunshot noises on your phone?

I may be wrong, but the general message Iā€™m getting from you here is that people whoā€™ve experienced discrimination, abuse, or any other traumatic event need to just ā€œget over itā€ because they ā€œchoose to be offendedā€.

Now, I donā€™t know you. I donā€™t know your life. But if this is in fact what youā€™re trying to say, then Iā€™ve noticed a pattern with people who take that stance. They seem to lack a lot of empathy. They donā€™t give a damn about anybody that isnā€™t themselves, and they try to downplay or discourage other peopleā€™s problems because they donā€™t want to deal with them, regardless of what that does to the other person. And that doesnā€™t get them very far in life.

If you want people to give a shit about you, you have to give a shit about them, too.

Sorry if Iā€™ve made an inaccurate assumption here. Iā€™m a bit angry.

I thought this was a thread about quotes from Discord.

It is, sorry. Is there any way a mod can split the posts from my first post down through the last one I posted into a different thread?

This is rather off topic.

Summed up:

  • If someone is making fun of you, ignore it. It doesnā€™t even matter
  • PTSD is something you canā€™t help. Anyone who plays with someone because they know it would make them have a attack is just messed up
  • Chill dude

its the internet, you literally talk to any person anywhere, and yes, bullies, bad people and so many weirdos are around, because the internet is just a big clusterfuck of cultures and subcultures, if you want to be safe, stay in a community where you think people appreciate you and where you truly feel safe, the subulture that you think suits you the most.
