How I would improve the current pet system

While condo pets have a good foundation, I think the system overall is very rudimentary and feels very unpolished.

To me, the current pets feel boring and dead. They do not interact with players unless asked to by said player. They do not feel alive; they feel like walking plushes.
A few suggestions I’d give to make them feel more alive:
Pets are living things, but in my own experiences using the pets, they seem to have no instincts for hunger or thirst, and will not go to a pet bowl unless commanded to. Same goes for resting. To add to this, pets should be able to rest on their own, just as a real animal might just rest on the floor if they’re tired enough, though they would prefer to use the bed if one is accessible. (also, there seems to be no way to make an invisible bed! I’d love for my kitty to sleep on my bed!) Along with sleeping, dogs and cats should just be able to relax, cats can loaf, and dogs can sit with their belly touching the floor. Bonus if they can get up to a chair or couch to do so. Cats also should intermittently sharpen their nails, either on the modular cat condo pieces, or on any canvas carpet material.

Dogs and Cats in particular are social animals. They should WANT to interact with players, and other animals as well. This asociality really makes the pets feel lifeless in my opinion. A real dog or cat would be DELIGHTED for their owners or other players to arrive. They should COME to the player to investigate, maybe be more likely to do so if the visitor is the host, or a steam friend of the host. Pets should also beg by coming near players and ask for food, water, or even pets—animals love getting pets!

There could also be “playing” mechanics, such as dogs going after thrown objects, and cats going after laser pointers. Both animals also have no ability to “run”, making the pets look lethargic.

Lastly, the pathing on the pets is VERY limited. My cat refuses to go through the doorways in the house condo! Apparently, the animal known for fitting through small spaces thinks this is too narrow!

EDIT: It seems like they do go for the food and drink, its just that the location i put them in was inaccessible.

I agree with this. Also, this will probably be lots of work, but I think the animations also all need an overhaul. The animals move in a bit of a creepy way
