Apologies if this was posted somewhere before but I haven’t seen any results of this suggestion after searching.
Despite Workshop Maps having the ability to tag their approximate difficulty, the only means of viewing this information is either through the Tower Unite workshop page on the Steam client or through the “Browse for Custom Levels” Browser.
In game, only official map name plates are color coded by difficulty while workshop maps are only color coded in teal. Official maps also have additional difficulty text on the selected map’s thumbnail as shown below:
Workshop maps on the other hand, currently have no text box that displays the difficulty on top of the thumbnail image. To display the difficulty to players looking for maps involves either:
- Manually editing the workshop thumbnail to include the difficulty,
- Altering the workshop title,
- Or fitting the difficulty in the beginning of the description.
An example of one of these workarounds:
For the player: this means if a map maker doesn’t do any of the above, there’s no way in-game to quickly determine the difficulty of a map before playing. This is especially true on the map vote screen where players no longer have access to the “Browse for Custom Levels” button.
What I am suggesting is a similar implementation of the difficulty indicators of official maps extended onto workshop maps utilizing the map’s difficulty tag for:
[Mockup examples in drop downs above]
Hopefully, this would allow players to have a more “at a glance” means of displaying if the next workshop map they’re about to play is either easy or hard.
If there are concerns about bad actors abusing this feature to trick players, it may only be worthwhile to implement this potential feature only for maps that have payouts enabled. This is due to the fact that those maps are already reviewed by the developers.
This Suggestion Post is also worth checking if there’s concerns about distinguishing between official and workshop maps.
