Condo Canvas Image Tutuorial

A lot of people like to use canvases in their condo- why wouldn’t you! They’re a great way to decorate and spruce up the place. Sometimes, you want to put your own custom images up. This is great and all, but I see a lot of people doing something I don’t entirely suggest-
####They host the image on Imgur.
Now listen, I’m not bashin’ Imgur. They’re great. But sometimes it’s an image that you don’t want to distribute. And sometimes I have issues with transparency. So, I’ve got a little tip on how to host images.

  1. Get your image. I’ll be using this one. It’s a simple window texture I made in like a minute.
  2. If you have a DropBox account, open it up. If not, why not make one?
  3. Upload your image to DropBox. Do this by dragging the file from a computer file window into your internet browser on the DropBox page (or clicking the upload button on the top of the page).
  4. This is where it becomes far less obvious what to do. Hover over your file in DropBox. It should look like this.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/zgr0keffumsiur7/imagetutorial1.png?raw=1
  5. Click Share. A link will show up.
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/anb0i2jtatls2n9/imagetutorial2.png?raw=1
That’s your image link. But, just slapping that into a canvas will cause it to load forever. There is a very simple, but very odd solution to this issue.
  6. Take your link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1lll6w5vxwoihti/windowtexture.png?dl=0. You see how it ends in ?dl=0 there? Remove that, and type ?raw=1. Your final URL should look like this:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/1lll6w5vxwoihti/windowtexture.png?raw=1.
  7. Put that into your canvas and enjoy!

Hope this helped some people. It’s much better than using Imgur.

EDIT: People in the replies have pointed out a couple things:

  1. Imgur does not delete old images.
  2. There are good alternatives. The ones brought up at the moment are: Jii.moe, ShareX (HIGHLY Recommended!), Puu.sh (deletes very unpopular posts over time), Gyazo (also deletes over time)

I’ll try that :o

I hope I’ll finally be able to load ALL (or 90% at least) of all my canvases…

In my experience, they’ve loaded rather quickly (at least on my side).

I did not know about raw=1 which is really cool!

Also be aware that you could get your dropbox temporarily disabled if lots of people load a single file tons of times. I mean like in the hundreds, though.

I’m gonna stay on Imgur then

I mean like hundreds in one view. You’ll be fine.

Oh, okay. Thanks for letting me know!
And glad I could teach you something useful!

Then I’ll reaallly stay on Imgur

Are you planning to have 100 players in your condo at once?

Oooh, you meant “hundreds people”!! :o
I thought you mean hundreds canvases…

Sorry for the confusion

But then, what if, we say 25 people load hundreds of canvases with the same image on them.
Would Dropbox freak out?

Are you sure? I uploaded this picture back in August and it’s still available.

But it’s also a direct link to the image, not the actual page it was hosted on, if I’m making any sense.

Did some researching and apparently,
##Imgur does not take down old images.

Very, very sorry for the misinformation, everyone! I’ve seen some ‘Imgur image deleted’ messages, but I suppose it’s from people requesting the images to be removed, because their help page says that’s the only time they delete images. Really sorry about this.

I use https://jii.moe/, an open source file host
Everything isn’t tied to an account, while this might be a mess for some people, I have sharex store the deletion http request for handling images…
and batch uploading

Yes,
Like if you had a large amount of canvases loaded in a popular lobby, they’ll limit it’s access a lot faster

You can also try Puu.sh, I’ve been using it for years now and it works very well.

There are several keyboard shortcuts that allow you to upload images in seconds.

Want to upload a file? Select it, press Ctrl+Shift+U, click 'Ok.

Want to upload a small portion of your screen? Press Ctrl+Shift+4, and your mouse will change to a crosshair. Now you can drag the rectangular selection box to the appropriate size and upon releasing the mouse it will upload the image.

Super quick and easy image uploads. The best part about it is they finish in seconds, and are then immediately copied to your clipboard.

puu.sh deletes images after a while
So does Gyazo

I recommend getting ShareX for the same features. You can pick the image hoster where the images should get uploaded. I’ve picked Imgur.

Picked?
Imgur is the default
Puu.sh got malware a few years ago, hooray closed source solutions

Only if your picture receives less than 100 views over like 6 months. If you have over 100 views (easy on TU) then it’ll stay permanently. I have stuff from 2013 on there still.

You say that like the big guys do it any better. The only difference is Puu.sh can’t cover it up as well as Google, Yahoo, Sony, Microsoft and the rest of them.

Clueless what I’m talking about? That’s because they have so much money they can make incidents like these invisible.

PS: Yes Google was recently hacked. Yes Yahoo was recently hacked. Yes Hotmail was recently hacked. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS!

Just saying that ShareX is a nicer program overall.

I love how everyone in this community tries to help eachother all the time.
It’s rare to see someone teaching others something in other communities.
I’m happy to be a part of it.
