The Bad Apple video was converted into a MIDI file and played back through Tower Unite. Tower Unite footage is sped up 750%, actual video time is about 27 minutes.
Basically, when a key is pressed down, a solid black canvas cube is revealed, which acts as a pixel.
The keyboards freak out when there are too many black pixels because there are too many MIDI events happening at once.
