Of course, this is my personal opinion which has chance to be supported as a suggestion only if there are other people thinking same.
I also like the song used in w.w.waterfall itself, so the problem is not in its own quality.
I don’t mean anything negative towards Will and I respect his work either way.
So I was pretty disappointed when I heard w.w.waterfall soundtrack being re-used from the arcade the minute I opened the map. It looks very great, but the soundtrack used for it feels really unfitting to its theme to me.
Small personal assessment of the situation
I’m not sure how exactly this happened, but, although I may be mistaken, judging by Will’s soundcloud it seems like he wanted to remaster his song, then releasing it under its own name, and at the same time he decided he can use it for accelerate.
It didn’t come out as a good fit though because of that - in fact, I would even rather hear it with the Nightcity map rather than in the w.w.waterfall.
I know that in case with the Sunrise Isles - in my personal view - the soundtrack came out fitting the map mood really great, and I’m guessing that it might be because Will was writing it specifically for that map. So… I wasn’t even sure if something like having the map’s soundtrack rewritten is actually ever possible. But if it is, that’s why I think that it would be great (and also really important to me I guess) if Wishy Washy Waterfall could have its own soundtrack written specifically for it.
Oh I didn’t know that it didn’t have it’s own track, I haven’t played in a while.
While it’s kinda weird to hear about it being a re-used track in the game, it’s not the first time it’s happened, I mean GLXY is re-used as the plaza mini games theme [at least last time I checked I’m pretty sure it’s just a sped up version of GLXY] while I can imagine that it’s kinda disappointing I also see why it would a track would get re-used, I’m sure maybe at some point it will have it’s own unique track, but I can’t really give my opinion on this 100% seeing as I haven’t heard the music yet.
Yea, as I said I couldn’t really give my opinion 100% cause I haven’t heard it yet, nor have I played the map yet. Mostly just was like addressing the fact that tracks are re-used in game, but I guess it was it was a needless addition to the thread. Also thank you, I get Prism and GLXY mixed up in my head so I thought it was GLXY’s theme being used for the plaza mini games.
Well, yeah, and it’s just that in this case it might’ve come from w.w.waterfall using just a song originally written for another purpose. Though a thing with tracks being re-used is also not really great because you have different things with same tune, making it feel like a bit of lack of soundtrack material (in cases when the they don’t share same tune on purpose).
But if it fit well, the fact it was kind of reused wouldn’t matter a lot in this case because originally it’s only played on an arcade machine, though it’s also not ideal. A bit worse case I think is rather with Nightcity - in case if Planet Panic doesn’t get different music - because now it will be two different gamemodes sharing same tune without a reason for it. While, on the other hand, it may fit Nightcity better than Cauterize fits Waterfall.
I mean, I don’t think it’s weird that wishy washy uses Cauterize. It was only used in a trailer before, which has happened with other maps’ music too, like for example an early version of Event Horizon’s song was used in the reveal trailer for lobby 3 a while before it was put in the game.
well, firstly it’s used in the arcade machine
but secondly, and more importantly, i believe it is also a reason why it fits into waterfall map mood badly
I don’t really get why the song being used in another part of the game makes it not fit with the map to be honest. By that logic shouldn’t Prism’s theme not fit with the map either, seeing as it’s used for a lot of the minigames? I just don’t think that alone’s a great reason to dismiss the theme as “fitting the map’s mood badly”.
I guess I’d understand if Lonely Gun used the same version of Cauterize that Wishy Washy does, but the two versions are way different from each other; Lonely Gun’s version is way more simple than Wishy Washy’s, for example.
Besides that, in my opinion I do feel like Cauterize fits Wishy Washy. The map is set in a lush canyon(?) with a lot of waterfalls in it. I feel like a more slow, calm theme like Cauterize fits pretty well with that.
nah, I never meant that the direct reason of why it doesn’t fit good is because it was reused. I think of it as an indirect one, like that it wasn’t being written specifically for this zone. Direct reason though is just the feeling the music gives. Of course in the end it comes to how much of people will agree with me, but it felt to me like it was really not about glass roads in the skies, waterfalls and jungles/grassy lands. To me personally this soundtrack feels like it’s rather night-ish, maybe sounding sort of like cyberpunk thing. That’s also why to me it was doing great as a soundtrack for the arcade trailer and also the shooting machine.
But yeah, it feels like really, really opposed to the image which the Waterfall gives me.
I also know it was remastered for the w.w.waterfall (if it was actually for the accelerate priority? or maybe Will just wanted to remaster it anyway, not sure) yeah, so the overall feeling it was giving remained same because of that.
I wrote cauterize specifically for wishy washy, but I used an early version of it for the arcade stuff cause at the time we needed something immediately and it fit the best. The reason it sounds like it doesn’t fit is probably because it gets associated with the arcade since that’s the first thing it released with.
Which is fine, don’t get me wrong, differing opinions are good. But songs take a loooooooong time to write and my workload is already bubbling over, so I’m probably not going to get around to making anything else for it
oh well. I guess it’s the best answer you can really give, so thank you. I guess it’s just unfortunate that for me it sounded like fitting that poorly (but yeah, it’s really not just the associations with the arcade), but, either way, if you’re honest, it feels really nice to know you were focused on the map inspiration-wise when you were writing the song.
Thank you for the answer.
Yunno, I think for cases like these, where someone doesn’t like a song for a specific track, there should be an option to replace music with ones you have saved. Then you could put whatever you felt would be suitable for a track.
that’s why I am thinking of creating a suggestion for workshop addon type replacing the in-game music
Maybe though an option with an in-game menu letting you manually replace exact songs with what you choose would be better, but for some reason I feel like it’d be more difficult to implement, not sure
Have you considered speeding up Cauterize for Wishy-Washy? All it really needs is a higher BPM and I think it would fit better, or at least fit with the other tracks.
