I’m thinking it might just be time to substitute it for a different effect if it’s impossible to implement.
If it’s too performance-costly, allow players to toggle it based on proximity like we can do with nametags.
Feels wrong to have one of the earliest added backer rewards still be unavailable after a third of my life.
EDIT: It was a milestone reward. Not a backer one. Oops.
Over the years we’ve attempted many ways to make this function, but all methods have led to FPS issues and there hasn’t been a good solution from any of our developers over the years.
It was a lot easier to make the glow feature in Source engine because it uses forwarded rendering, Unreal engine makes glow effects like this a lot costlier and difficult to pull off to make it look correct. We can do outlines, but not a glow.
However, this isn’t a backer reward. This was a milestone that originated from GMT and anyone can unlock it.
I’d be happy to replace it with something similar.
As much as I love the idea of being glowy, we already almost have that already. With many otjer wearbles/accessories having some sort of glow type effect almost like ethereal wings looking somewhat glowy. It almost feels like the player model itself glowing might actually be too much! So, visually, an outline of sorts (maybe like those “cartoon” filters in some 3d model apps? Being aplied to any/the default models?) However its implemented, a simple outline seems a lot more sensible and it can actually help add contrast to the model. If its COLORABLE, it might even help visibility in some of the ZM maps for instance
I actually like the idea of an outline, that’s a decent tradeoff in my opinion, plus I think it’d work better than a glow anyways because most people are using a workshop skin themselves, which I don’t think the glow would generally work well with.
