[0.18.2.0] (Linux) Random freezes while playing on Proton

Randomly when playing, my game will completely freeze and I will have to open System Monitor and force-close it. Most times this happened were in the Plaza, but it has happened to me while editing my Condo as well, and one time it even happened while loading the Plaza. I’ve noticed it happens more when alt-tabbing, but it’s still not consistent and still happens randomly when not doing so.

Steps to Reproduce

I’m really not sure how to reproduce the bug as it only happens sporadically when doing random things, but here are my system specs in case those help:

System Specs
  • CPU: Intel Core i9-12900K
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070
  • Memory: 64 GB
  • Operating System: Tuxedo OS 3
  • NVIDIA Driver Version 560.35.03
  • Proton Versions Tested: GE-Proton9-16, Proton 9.0-3, Proton Experimental, Proton 8.0-5 (Haven’t frozen during a decently long editing session in a Condo, will test further)
  • KDE Plasma Version 6.1.5
  • KDE Frameworks Version 6.6.0
  • Qt Version 6.7.2
  • Kernel Version 6.11.0-103009-tuxedo (64-bit)
  • Graphics Platform: X11

What I expected to happen

The game should run normally; if it crashes, it should close and bring up the Unreal Engine crash reporter.

What happened

At random times, the game completely freezes. Sounds that were playing continue to play normally, but the game is entirely unresponsive. Minimizing and maximizing the game results in it just showing what was on the screen before maximizing it again. At this point, Alt+F4 and closing it via the taskbar do not work, so I have to open System Monitor and manually kill the process.

Notes / Media

I’ve tried to record a video of this but right now I only have so much free time and disk space. It happens often enough to actively hinder my experience but not so frequently as to be reasonably predictable.

I have this as well, or at least something remarkably similar, and haven’t been able to find a solution.

Things in common are:

Complete freezes, sound keeps playing, have to manually kill, seemingly completely random happening in multiple places. No crash reporter.

Things that are different are:

I can utilize alt + f4, but I cannot use my mouse when frozen, so I have to use keyboard to choose the end task button. I cannot minimize the game.

I tried my best at troubleshooting it here (Random but Persistent Crashes, Various Troubleshooting Detailed) but I feel like it was mostly unfruitful unfortunately.

I was wondering if it was something to do with my model of graphics card, but… I guess not. I’ll repost my specs here for consolidation in case it helps.

System: Linux Mint 21.3 x86_64
DE: Cinnamon 6.0.4
Kernel: 5.15.0-116-generic
CPU: Intel i5-9600K (6) @ 3.700GHz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 5600 OEM/5600
Memory: 16 GB

I’ve also tested proton GE, experimental, 9, and some others, no luck. It feels like flatpak proton performs a tiny bit better than DEB, but it does not fix it.

If you find a solution, please update :o

(My old “solution” had to be adjusted, because my launch options were no longer working correctly and were lagging the game, so I have no launch options anymore.)

Update: Just got a freeze on Experimental too. Currently trying some other versions and will update the main post with my findings.

Also, KarthNemesis: Are you on a single or dual monitor setup? I’m on a dual-monitor setup so I can move my mouse over to the other monitor and that’s how I was able to minimize/maximize the game. Keeping it on the one monitor the game was on prevented me from using it in the taskbar menu just like in your case.

Single monitor.

Also experiencing this issue, random intermittent freezes that seem more common when ALT-Tabbing. I’ve noticed when in windowed mode, resizing the window a couple of times seems to bring the game back to a playable state… until it ends up happening again. Unsure of reproduction steps other than playing around with ALT-Tab a bit until it freezes.

System specs are as follows:

  • OS: Fedora Linux 41 (Cinnamon) x86_64
  • Kernel: 6.11.5-300.fc41.x86_64
  • DE: Cinnamon 6.2.9 (x11)
  • WM: Mutter (Muffin)
  • CPU: Intel i7-9750H (12) @ 4.5GHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Mobile
  • GPU: Intel CoffeeLake-H GT2 [UHD Graphics]
  • Memory: 16GB
  • Proton Versions Tested: Experimental, 7.0

Any sort of update with this? This has become so frequent that the game is borderline unplayable!!
