Since the Workshop Sound Pack update the game started having trouble when it comes to loading models that are correctly downloaded and on the cache.
Steps to Reproduce
To get the issue to pop up 100% of the time you need to upload a new model into the workshop and go directly into the plaza.
Upload Workshop Model
Go to the Plaza
Equip said Workhop Model
The model will appear as “No Item: Loading” so it looks like as if the game doesn’t recognize what model it should be loading, if you go to the location of the game files and search for the cache of the model it should be there and it should match with the one you just uploaded (I checked) so is not like the data gets corrupted or the model doesn’t download.
If you close the game, clean the cache for that specific model and subscribe to it on Steam (To make sure the model gets downloaded first) once you open up the game the model should load both on the appareance menu and in a condo but as soon as you hit the plaza the model will stop loading altogether.
The reason why clearing the cache for the specific model in this case is better than clearing the whole Workshop cache is because if you clean every single model’s cache chances are you will run into this very same issue for models that already were working before.
Eventually the models will start working correctly, so far for newly uploaded playermodels it takes close to a day for them to load correctly on the plaza, old models sometimes also seem to be affected, the issue applies for mostly everything workshop.
What I expected to happen
Models loading when they are downloaded and on the cache
I can’t stress how much this resonates with me and my friends on here. The model issues came in full force after the update. I understand maybe it’s due to the latest change to PM rigging but holy cow. Something definitely broke on how the game reads cached workshop items
“Eventually the models will start working correctly”
If you download a model through the game, then exit the game completely after it has been downloaded, then restart the game do they load?
Yeah I’m getting a ton of people coming through my condo where their models aren’t loading for me. Only the people who I see regularly that are in my cache display right.
iirc we tried that with a user and we just couldn’t get the model to load at all when it was on the “Loading: No Item” state, the only way to get it to load was to clean the cache for it, subscribing to it on the Workshop (so the game wouldn’t have to prompt the download when equipping it) and then equipping it either on the Appareance Menu (Main Menu) or a condo.
Equipping the model after it had the issue whether you restarted the game or not would not make it load, you had to go to throught the process mentioned before to get it to load again
Sorry I’m looking for something more specific to what I had asked. To be clear I’m trying to ascertain if it’s only when you’ve downloaded it to your cache and are trying to load it on the same run of the game that it breaks.
There’s this mention of a day gap between it working and not, and if that’s the actual issue then that implies some weird interaction with steam. If all it takes is rebooting the game then that’s likely purely our code. Either way it directs where I need to look for the issue.
The three times I ran into the issue it went as follows:
As soon as the model is uploaded you go into the plaza, the model will fail to load and show up as “Loading: No Item”, if you check your cache folder the .plymodel and .json files should be the very same as the ones you uploaded. If you go into your condo or the appareance menu the model will still be infinitely loading.
Restarting the game will not fix it, the issue will still be there unless you go out of your way to manually clean the cache, susbcribe to the model, etc. (The process I mentioned before basically).
Other users might be able to see the model while it is still “Loading” for you.
If you don’t do nothing after the restarting the game a couple of times (I assume) or let enough time go by (usually a day) the model will start showing up correctly when you go into the plaza.
That is what has been reported to me by a couple of users that tried uploading a model I provided them, I’ll let you know if I manage to run into the same issue again and if I can point you in the right direction
I was having issues with Steam stopping downloads and me having to change download servers consntantly (not related to the game, just something with my ISP I guess?) so some of the model issues could be just related to my end, it took me a while to figure this out so at the time I thought this had to do with the problems some users reported, but their models seem to be working now and I just tested with a newly uploaded model and it worked just fine.
If someone else reports they are having the same issue I’ll see if I can further test it on my end and give you guys more info but I guess for now it works.
i’ve been having this same issue too, after i uploaded a tower unite avatar, i tried it and the rest of my avatars stopped working, including workshop furniture. i reset my cache, reset my pc, changed download regions, i did everything yet it doesn’t bother loading.
yea this has been a ongoing problem for a long long time same with rubber banding all over the place in plaza server which has been an issue since i got the game in 2016. 3 different pc’s over the years all the same issues.
Do any workshop items/models work for you? i.e. is it only your own uploaded avatars/furniture?
Could you also try manually unsubscribing from some of the workshop models that aren’t working via steam, then, without resubscribing try loading them in-game again?
Yep, the issue is happening in full force again. I should note these are all my models but a model I just rigged for someone they couldn’t see it either. The clearing PlayerData/cache fix worked for them at first but then it only let them see the model in the character previewer and broke immediately in game. Which is a common issue I’ve noticed. And, trying to change models while it’s loading one model will never stop trying to load the previous model.
PlayerData/cache fix does work for me, though. But for the person trying to test out the model I rigged for them, it doesn’t.
Edit: Unsubscribing from that specific model fixed it for them. I don’t subscribe to models, just favorite them, so it makes sense I didn’t run into that specific issue.
I just did my normal monhtly cache wipes and am having these issues now as well. I got a couple of my older uploaded models to show (for me at least, and people who they’re cached on), but literally EVERYONE I see in game is just a ghost outline now.
UPDATE: So the “Everything is broken” issue was Steam Workshop not liking the VPN server I was on. I’m now back to just the newly uploaded player model not loading.
UPDATE 2: Workshop items working, no player models loading in, everyone a ghost outline. Turning workshop player models off then on turned them all into default skeletons at least…
