[0.16.11.0] Cannot Move While Condo Editing

I couldn’t find a thread on this, despite it being a bug I’ve seen people in game talk about.
Many times, especially while condo editing, I’ll get locked in place. As a workaround, I equip a vehicle which fixes it. Otherwise pressing K is the only option.

I’m not sure if is related to the bug where your cursor gets stuck out or not, but that happens regularly.

No clip seems to be a big reason getting stuck in place happens.

Steps To Recreate

Use noclip and just edit the condo, opening the inventory, clicking items, etc. You’ll probably get stuck soon.

It’s not just noclip.
When I alt-tab it’s more likely to happen. Even not in condo.
So I believe it’s something else is going on with the game programming.

Yeah I’ve had it happen without noclip, I just find that its the most consistent way to recreate.

I’ve been trying to track this issue down but it’s really hard to reproduce and happens seemingly randomly while using editing tools.

This bug still persists in 0.17.5.0 but here is a way to consistently reproduce the bug:

  1. Open an edit menu (edit menus are: simply turning on advanced edit; or right-clicking on an item and pressing edit; or left-clicking an item to open the manipulate menu)
  2. Take control of the camera by holding right-click.
  3. While still holding right-click, open the pause menu.
  4. Release right-click while the pause menu is open.

The player is now stuck. If you resume, you’ll find you can no longer move. This issue does not happen if you open your inventory (that is hold Q) instead of an edit menu and follow the rest of the steps even though you must control the camera with right-click when Q is held down.

I have only found the above steps capable of triggering the bug, but I think I know why it feels like it happens randomly. Simply put, I believe people trigger the bug and don’t notice they can’t move until they try to move later on. Pressing Escape to close a menu is a common operation but TU does not handle Escape like that in the edit menus so I can see why this could get triggered a lot and go unnoticed.

Something of note that might be related to the issue is that if you have any (or at least almost any) menu open and open the pause menu, you can still move around even though movement input is supposed to be disabled while in the pause menu. However, the pause menu functions properly (prevents movement input) if you were controlling the camera with right-click when you opened the pause menu.

I totally forgot to check opening the chat. In the process of checking that, I have found two similar alternative ways to trigger the bug. These will probably be fixed with the same fix for the way I mentioned before but I thought I’d share them anyway, just in case.

  1. Open the manipulate menu. (this only seems to work for the manipulate menu)
  2. Control the camera by holding right-click.
  3. Open the chat or hold C to open the character menu or alt+tab out of TU.
  4. Release right-click.
  5. Close the chat menu or character menu or alt+tab back into TU.
At this point you’ll notice you have control of the camera even though you are not holding right-click.
  6. Open the pause menu.
  7. Press right-click (just a simple click)

The player is now stuck. Sidenote: for some reason, the chat can be opened when controlling the camera with the manipulate menu open. Other menus do not seem to allow the chat to be opened.

A more nuanced way of triggering the bug:

  1. Open any edit menu (again not the inventory menu aka Q).
  2. Take control of the camera with right-click.
  3. Alt+tab out of TU.
  4. Release right-click outside of the TU window (must be outside).
  5. Alt+tab or click back (not right-click) into TU.
At this point you’ll notice you have control of the camera even though you are not holding right-click.
  6. Open the pause menu.
  7. Press right-click (just a simple click)

The player is now stuck.

Thank you for finding all these scenarios, it’s quite hard to track down but now I have a good lead to fix this once and for all.
