The lantern item stops emitting light at a pretty close range. Other lights do this too (probably because optimization) but they usually stop emitting light much further away which makes it a lot less noticeable.

- Place a lantern
- Walk away from it

It would still emit light from far away

It stopped emitting light when standing not-very-far away
