Usually if you drift, you’re stopped from steering too far in the opposite direction you’re drifting in (for example, if you drift with shift+D and try to tilt left with A, you won’t be able to steer the car very far in that direction while drifting).
However, sometimes, if you drift while you’re getting boosted (from speed boosts on the track or melons), you’ll be able to steer the car in the opposite direction as if you’re driving normally, which in my experience usually leads into me driving into a wall, as I countersteer most of the time I drift.
