If you don't make Tower Unite F2P it will die

They need the money to keep working on this game. This is a real game, made on a real engine, and they are going to need to earn something or the company itself will fall down the drain.

I enjoyed Playstation Home but if it was such a financial success it wouldn’t have died. I did like sponsored zones in there and it’s something that possibly could work for tower unite. Also, while no micro transactions is a great feature it may be a good idea to have donations for special cosmetic perks.

As for the main topic f2p can work for some games but wouldn’t be right for this game. Most people associate f2p with pay to win or general low quality. Having the guaranteed money for entrance into the game insures more steady revenue and knowing there won’t be additional charges could motivate people to buy the game. Hell people may buy it out of principle cause many people are tired of f2p.

: [8:33 PM] macdguy: i posted somewhere on our forums that as long as i am part of pixeltail (which i am the founder of, so i wouldn’t ever leave), there will be no microtransactions in tower unite. our entire team hates them. we built our indiegogo platform on the idea of no microtransactions. from the beginning of the project (there’s a video of me even saying this) we knew that microtransactions would just ruin the entire game. microtransactions will never be part of tower unite(edited)
[8:38 PM] macdguy: also, thanks, i understand how the game industry is, but i cannot speak for other devs, but it’s probably the most difficult industry from a pr standard as words can be seen differently from everyone’s point of view (or translation). it’s also hard to explain what goes behind the scenes with game development sometimes as its a very technical field.

every developer is different, you know. i started pixeltail games (through modding) when i was in highschool and then continued my studies to college. i ended up leaving college to continue pixeltail and make tower unite with my very talented friends. so, in my case, pixeltail is very dear to me and is pretty much entirely my life other than my wife and cat.

mac, if you dont want this to be here, delete it, but this awnsers the question perfectly.

Mac has… had a cat? That’s not a secret.

I envy his glass cat-proof keyboard cover he has, to keep his cat from rolling all over his keyboard.

Except they aren’t inspired by any of those things really? Unless this was the case with GMTower, no. Tower Unite is inspired by GMod Tower basically.

A F2P game would among other things people have listed, significantly reduce the quality of the community. Despite the few annoying kids i’ve come across that are easily mutable, there’s a lot of awesome people around, and that sense of community would be diluted by both F2P mechanics that create a social divide of haves and have nots, and the influx of trolls and other assholes just looking for a new target, made easier for them by having no entry fee.

F2P games work in some instances, but as both developers and players are starting to see over time they have severe limitations, of which games like Tower Unite would be the most vulnerable from.

Gmod Tower started development in 2006, Gmod Tower is made by Pixeltail Games, Tower Unite is the ue4 version of Gmod Tower. PlayStation Home didn’t exist back then. Check your facts please

The reason why its empty is because there is no content because its EARLY ACCESS which Pixeltail have stated many times. Alot of GMT players dont play Tower anymore because they are waiting for the Casino Update on Sep 24th.

Proof? I did Business Studies, I never heard this!

And also, Pixeltail have stated to me in the Discord that if they made it free, they would basically give it away as they hate microtransactions. The 15 dollar price tag is supposed to cover the full content but it isnt there so be patient.

The problem with Tower Unite is that it’s a relatively unknown game, compared to GMOD. People played GMOD for the many different game modes it had, and they’d see GMT on the server list with a high number of players and join. They didn’t buy GMOD exclusively for GMT (granted, I’m sure a handful did) but for TTT, Prophunt, etc. With TU, I fear that come launch day, people, especially younger players, will be dissuaded by the price of the game (or even the fact that there is a price to pay for the game).

That being said, F2P isn’t exactly the best choice, either, as I personally hate microtransactions. I’d suggest that a free version be made that’s somewhat barebones. It may come with a small, lower level apartment (may justify the use of lower floors instead of everyone getting a top floor penthouse lol) and maybe even restricted access to certain things (casino, certain condo furniture/electronics, etc. No curved TV’s for that crappy 3rd floor apartment :stuck_out_tongue: ). The full game could be $14.99.

And to bump up player numbers, I think that all servers besides TU official ones should be closed to keep players together. It pains me greatly to see only 10 players in the lobby.

We have no plans to change the price or make it free to play. We feel the price is fair for the amount of content in the game. Considering all future updates will be free, we find this to be a fair price. Microtransactions would only hurt the community and lock content behind pay walls.

In that regard, will there be future steam sales of TU when appropriate, or will it just always be fixed at $15?

Eventually we will have a sale when we are ready to put the game in such a spot light.

If I play a game my enjoyment of it is based on if the game is good, not team size, not development state. People are allowed to make negative reviews if the game is lacking content.

It’s a good thing that this game is 15$, that is cheap and merciful for a game like Tower Unite. A popular triple-A company would’ve probably priced this at 40 or 50 dollars.
