You will not receive a payout for a combo unless you break it.
The only exception to this is the Perfect Combo.
Steps to Reproduce
- Achieve a combo that rewards a payout (5+ combo minimum)
- Do not break the combo and do not finish the race

Get a payout for the combo

No payout was rewarded
