I imagine this is a really rare occurrence, but If you have the Birb item running after you complete the first race and run into any ground object. You will have that item at the start of the next round. It does not work as far as I am aware but it stays in the slot until a new item is picked up.

The birb shield allows you to pick up whatever you run into. My favorite is the golf ball one lol
However, I wonder if this has something to do with sometimes you pick up items it won’t let you use? It will show you have it but it doesn’t matter what you click or in what order, you’re not allowed to use it. Then it gets replaced.
