I am disappointed about Tower Unite

When the developers announced the game, they promised many modes, but after the game releases on steam over more than 1 year, and that’s what we have.

Most of the promised updates are not made

Half of the mini-games were not made

Not fixed most bugs

Low online, online is up during updates.
Laser tag update online.

I really hope that the game will not be forgotten and will make updates. But what happens now with the game is strange.

You seem to be under the impression Tower Unite is a fully shipped game, it’s not. It’s still in early access and hasn’t been “released” yet.

I think the main problem is that the communication between the steam users, who don’t know about the forums existance, don’t really get updated about their recent devlogs or anything like that. Therefor it gives it the impression that the game is dead.

They are definitelly updating it, even if it’s not in a rapid speed as many would have hoped, but still, they are a small team.
The early access branch isn’t really as advertised as any other games and thats intentional. If they did just advertise their game more in its current state, the player base would increase, but the ones who are waiting for long won’t get the same experience as they would when they would get the game for the very first time. That wouldn’t really be as profitable, nor fun.

If you didn’t already know; the devs have a trello where you can keep track of what’s currently being worked on:
https://trello.com/b/6BwRMiPw/tower-unite-roadmap
On top of that, they also have a development section where they post daily dev logs.

Also the stream that they try to do every other Friday:

(Don’t know why, but felt the need to point these out)

Game development takes time and there’s a lot of things that can come up that will delay things unexpectedly (a good example is Zak going to the hospital for lung surgery and being off for a month).

  • Backer digital items
  • Little Crusaders Game World (with 3 unique maps)
  • Monorail
  • Laser Tag
  • A completely new menu with a new server browser
  • Player moderation
  • Voice chat
  • Dedicated servers
  • Soundcloud support
  • Basic Twitch support
  • 100-200 new items
  • Catsacks with unlockable items

I am currently on vacation, so forgive me if I forgot something on this list.

As for the bugs complaint, we have fixed over hundreds of reported bugs. The reflection bug you are pointing out is a limitation to the reflection rendering in Unreal 4 and it’s not really possible to fix. We have more bugs fixes being worked on as we speak. We also optimize our game every update (next patch has some good optimizations to Plaza as well).

We have recently been slow with our updates because we are working on a Steam inventory fix (we have to recode our entire Steam Inventory backend) due to a request from Valve.

I am very active on the Steam community forums and I try to inform them as much as I personally can. I will continue to improve on this.

Also on each update we post, we link to our forums here so Steam community members can see our announcements.

This week I have answered similar concerns this week on our Steam community, which you can read here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/394690/discussions/0/1474221865193518848/#c1474221865196260565

We also have been doing daily developer logs so you know each day what we work on. We update our Trello very often and I reply multiple times on our forums every day.

The truth is, things take longer than you may expect. We have a high quality bar with all of our releases and we aim to get them out as fast as possible, but often times things get delayed so we can improve on them or an issue came up that we have to deal with unexpectedly (such as the Steam inventory fix that has now officially delayed Fishing, Cooking, Rollercoaster, Global Chat, Shared Lobby Players, Workshop support as our programmers had to shift focus immediately).

Thank you for your concerns. We’re working as fast and hard as we can!

Also, I’ll take this time to update on each feature that you mentioned and what status they are at. I like being very transparent about our development.

Bumper Cars:

  • The bumper car model is done.
  • We have a basic layout of the building and interior for bumper cars.
  • The gameplay will be worked on probably around the time Planet Panic redo will happen as most of the movement code for the bumper cars (to ensure lag is less of an issue) will be made with the new Planet Panic ufo vehicle code.

Air Hockey:

  • The airhockey table model (pucks and handles) have been finished.

  • Arcade is a major feature and Air Hockey will most likely come out with Arcade. Due to some concerns with networking (as we learned from developing on Unreal 4 for a long time now), Air Hockey may end up being a Condo only item.

Shooting Gallery:

  • We discussed this a few times that the shooting gallery was a base game that we used to create all Lobby games. This was indeed the fact. Shooting Gallery helped me make Laser Tag, Trivia, Typing Derby, etc.

  • Due to feedback from the community, I have put Shooting Gallery on hold for Plaza Events and Fishing. I am currently the only developer who programs gameplay as our other programmers are extremely busy with way harder tasks like Workshop and Global connected servers.

  • Eitherway, most of the logic is done, and it just needs to be finished up.

Condo Pets:

  • We have internally established our full feature set for pets.
  • Pets will most likely happen after cooking is finished.
  • They are lower priority than most features at the moment.
  • There are some issues we are still working on for pets to work in community condos.

Cooking:

  • We have the cooking system completely done. You can take two or more items and combine them to cook into a new item.
  • We have a prototype of a cooker working.
  • Due to the Steam inventory rewrite as requested by Valve, this has been delayed.
  • We also plan to have cooking tie into the Ocean Expansion and cosmetic upgrades using a fusing system (so cooking is not just a novelty).

Advanced Condo Tools:

  • Again, due to the Steam inventory issues, this has been delayed.
  • We have decided on making Portable Condo weapon tools that will handle most of the advanced tools that people desire.
  • This isn’t that far away and community condos will expedite this feature.

Ocean Expansion:

  • This feature is definitely planned to be one our of last features to Lobby. It is a huge project and will take a lot of time and development.

  • As it stands, we have all our goals and internal programming worries solved, but we have to develop this.

Game World Mutators:

  • We are currently discussing this feature. However, it is a bit hard for us to completely get a picture of the feature until all of our Game Worlds are finished. This feature will most likely be worked on after Achievements and Upgrades are done, though.

Fishing:

  • Steam inventory changes has delayed this.
  • We have the internal system for fishing finished.
  • We have most of the visuals finished, but there is still about 2-3 weeks of development left before Fishing can be released.
  • I am currently in charge of Fishing development and I am on vacation which also delayed its release.

The game is in early access.

As has been pointed out already, the game is still in early access, which means it’s not finished. A ton of progress has been made since release, though. It’s come a long way. You seem to be under the impression that this is a finished game, which it is not. I’ve always hated how so many people buy early access games and then shit on them for being unfinished. That’s literally the point of early access. You’re buying an unfinished game to help test it and influence it’s development. If you just want to play finished games, then you shouldn’t buy early access games

I feel the same way you do but there’s issues with our thoughts:

  1. They thought using UE4 would be simple. It isn’t and it obviously set back a lot of projects.

  2. Only reason there is a low online playerbase is because people found ways to get money easily. There obviously wasn’t much to do after you’ve customized your condo since most of the gamemodes aren’t out. That’s why when there’s new updates the playerbase spikes. It’s really just every game’s issue, and this game’s playerbase is a really, and I mean really small demographic.

  3. Most of the really game breaking bugs are gone. Auto reset pins (which made me despise bowling) are gone, the game loads quicker, and that bug you shown isn’t a huge issue.

Using Unreal 4 has definitely helped our development of this game. It is just a massive game with multiple games that all have to be attended to. There’s also a lot of things that are unique problems to our game that we have to figure out and solve. Stuff like the Global Chat and Casino required external server software we have to develop unrelated to Unreal 4. I’d say that Unreal 4 is still the best engine we could have chosen for our game.

I do agree the playerbase is low because they’ve experienced quite a bit of the game already. But we’re still adding stuff so we get more and more new people each update. I also strongly think that upgrades, plaza events, global chat, achievements/badges, and all that will keep players more engaged. Also adding things like daily awards or daily events could keep people on the game more than what we have. I believe a lot of the playerbase is waiting, which is understandable.

Yeah, according to SteamSpy, there are 31k people following the game, so the population definitely has the potential to grow substantially.

There’s literally a disclaimer on early access games that warns you that you’re not buying the finished product.

Ok… it clearly says in the image you supplied at the Fourth Milestone, of which it reached, “4 Game Worlds by early access release”; we have 5 currently sooooo…

Man @macdguy you are on vacation, you should be enjoying yourself and disconnect from the forums for a few days! I know the game is your baby and you just want to defend it but I feel bad FOR you that you felt the need to chime in so elaborately

Yeah I completely understand that. From a customer’s perspective I just thought you guys weren’t experienced with Unreal 4 (correct me if im wrong), which caused all these really bad bugs.

Unreal 4 is still being developed and a lot of engine changes have happened during our development of Tower Unite that have both improved our game and also caused some pretty bad bugs (such as the D3D crash).

No worries, I’m having a great vacation and I was resting that day from activities so I wanted to spend sometime on my laptop.

Virus random very bad. Win any game be hard because you spawned 1 vs 5-6 players with guns + bomb.
